Transforming company culture for growth, scale, and well-being

Hero-2_g2y9ms

Summary

Housemarque, one of the leading game studios in Finland (and recently acquired by Sony), is on track to further scale their development. To do so, the team has been looking to transform the way they work to become more sustainable, fluid, and ultimately a more productive organization able to take on bigger productions.

Housemarque partnered with Reaktor to transform their company into a learning organization. Using Agile and LeSS frameworks, Housemarque’s team is now set up to scale in a sustainable way, keeping well-being and efficiency at its core.

"This partnership has helped us get to a much more organized position, while accelerating our team’s well-being and making sure we have the tools to scale aggressively without anyone burning out."

Introducing Agile methods and new ways of working

The core of our collaboration was to create a set of processes and methods for running the organization in a better, more effective way. Some of the key objectives included:

→ The ability to transition into working on larger projects, and doing so sustainably.
→ Working in an agile way that allows for aggressive schedules while keeping everyone’s well-being as a priority.
→ Having paths and a culture that allows for teammates to grow professionally within the organization.

The frameworks used included the Agile frameworks Scrum and LeSS.
The implementation included planning, review, and retrospective meetings, as well as managing and refining the product backlog for an organization of more than 80 people.

We began by running multiple training programs. Everyone participated in basic trainings, while product owners and other key roles additionally took more advanced training on several different topics. In total, we’ve trained around 80 folks on Agile, and ran a few sessions with 20-40 teammates that have gone deeper into product owner training.

As a new game implies a new organization, we had the chance to start implementing these new practices from the very beginning. As the game progresses, so does the size and complexity of both the product and the team. This specific project has grown from a team of five people to around 100 folks now, and is still expected to grow further.

Results show growing org-wide confidence

Andrew Smith, the Lead Producer at Housemarque, describes the results he is seeing:

“There is so much more clarity in what we do now. Clarity of purpose and a sense of team spirit that allows us to better foresee and plan the next phases of development. Looking into the future, I think we have a lot more confidence in our ability to take on bigger, and potentially even multiple projects. This partnership has helped us get to a much more organized position, while accelerating our team’s well-being and making sure we have the tools to scale aggressively without anyone burning out.”

When speaking of the relationship working with Reaktor, Andrew adds:

“The people we’ve worked with at Reaktor have been just wonderful. So personal, knowledgeable, and patient. They’ve been very adaptive to changing circumstances and just in general great to work with. The team has been able to make adjustments on the fly, navigating difficult challenges with elegance. They’ve helped our production team take more ownership to initialize growth strategies. This allows us to scale our in-house skills on our own, and build more org-wide confidence to take on bigger challenges.”
