Get to know some of our previous junior talents

“I like how your role at Reaktor can progress. I joined the company as a visual designer but had ambitions to sharpen my UX design skills too. I wasn’t boxed into a certain role but I’ve actually been able to broaden my skill set as a designer.”

Meet Anna. Anna has been working the past two summers at Reaktor as a visual and UX designer. She’s been focusing on health tech creating web applications for national and international healthcare clients.

“I had no prior consulting experience before joining Reaktor. I thought that I’d need to use a lot of energy to keep up but helpful colleagues have actually made learning easy and fast. Also, our several hobby clubs have nicely balanced the time between work and leisure.”

Meet Aleksi. Aleksi has spent two summers at Reaktor as a junior developer. He’s been using his full-stack development and growth hacking skills in creating a customer portal for a teleoperator client.

“I value the proactive way Reaktor takes care of its employees. The company is built around a sense of community and people’s wellbeing is a top priority. People actually want to know how you are doing.”

Meet Mira. Mira has spent three summers at Reaktor as a UX designer. She’s been designing new services for a healthcare client, and recently focusing on how to make application forms accessible.

“I’ve been amazed by how much effort is put into personal development at Reaktor. Besides the project work, I’ve been honing my tech and consulting skills through many internal workshops and lectures held by other Reaktorians.”

Meet Valtteri. Valtteri joined Reaktor in spring 2020 as a junior developer. He’s been completing a diverse set of mobile and web development tasks related to his client’s billing, customer, and sales services.

As a junior employee, why should I apply to Reaktor?

That’s a good question! There can be different answers regarding who’s asking. However, we’re proud to say that as a junior employee at Reaktor, you get to work on meaningful projects in which you can learn and develop your substance skills while working with some of the most experienced experts in the field. In addition to seasoned colleagues, we have a broad range of interesting client projects that might offer you a home for the spring, summer, or fall. Our previous junior employees have worked on projects. e.g. for adidas, YLE, Finavia, and Aava.

Do I need to speak Finnish to land a junior job at Reaktor?

Not necessarily! Due to our current project portfolio, fluency in Finnish is a plus. However, in some cases, an English-only developer with good programming skills can easily land a job. As to junior designers, it is a bit harder for us to offer projects in English but we hope that wouldn’t prevent anyone from applying. We’re evaluating the situation always case by case and looking into every candidate’s profile as a whole and not solely focusing on language skills.

What kind of tasks do your junior employees do?

As a junior employee, you’ll work in one of our client projects as an equal member of the Reaktor team. We don’t expect you to know everything; you can always reach out to a more senior team member for advice.

As a developer, you’ll be doing everything from designing, writing and testing code to reviewing it. As a UX/visual designer, you’ll be working with different interfaces, contributing to layouts, prototyping, and user testing – among other things.

You’ll usually work in one client project at a time, and your tasks will most likely vary depending on the project you’re working on. In addition to your Reaktor team, you will also work closely with the client(s), putting your excellent communication skills to use.

Are your junior employees getting paid?

Yes, absolutely! We’re following the salary recommendations given out by TEK when determining our junior employees’ starting salaries. Previous work and/or other relevant experience are also taken into consideration and they can positively affect the starting salary.

Are you hiring junior employees in your offices outside Helsinki?

Sometimes we are! In addition to our year-around junior positions in Helsinki, we’re occasionally hiring summer developers in Turku. However, in 2021 all of our summer jobs are located in the Helsinki capital area.

I’m a service designer looking for junior position. Should I apply?

It depends! Unfortunately, we’re unable to offer internships for designers outside the summer season, and we have had some troubles offering summer jobs for designers who are merely focused on service design. Thus, in order to guarantee meaningful client projects for a relatively short period of time, we’re first and foremost looking for summer designers with strong skills in either UX or visual design. However, service and concept design is definitely something we do as a company, so if you have strong UX or visual design skills in addition to your service design skills, we encourage you to apply. Knowledge in service and concept design in addition to UX or visual skills makes an interesting combination.

I’m under 18 years old. Can I apply for a junior position?

Unfortunately, not yet. Currently, we employ junior developers and designers over 18 years old only. However, we encourage you to keep on honing your programming or designing skills and apply once you’re a bit older. Until then, you might want to check out our tips for learning.

I’m not a developer nor a designer. Can I still apply for a junior position at Reaktor?

Sadly, we’re usually able to offer junior positions only for software developers and digital designers. However, we are constantly keen on getting to know new talents. If you’re looking for something else than a developer/designer job, you can check out if we have other trainee positions available.
